Revolut has more than 1.3 million users in the country and offers Standard, Plus, Premium, and Metal accounts, all of which include debit cards. Previously, UK-based fintech Monese launched Romanian currency accounts in February 2020 in partnership with Libra Internet Bank, while Netherlands-based digital bank bunq launched in Romania in October 2019.
- To offer a more convenient way of making government payments on the go, the Romanian government is increasingly focusing on digitalization of the payments sector. In June 2021, the Romanian Digitalization Authority partnered with Mastercard and Tremend Software Consulting to develop a new mobile app, which is an extension to its existing online portal, Ghieul.ro. According to the authority, approximately 1.7 million transactions were registered on the Ghiseul.ro portal between January and July 2021, an increase of 230% in terms of number of transactions and 250% in terms of value of transactions compared to the same period of 2020. The app can be authenticated using biometric registration and provides various services such as enrolling cards, transaction history, and notifications of outstanding debts and payments (including taxes, services, and fines).
- Alternative payments are increasingly gaining prominence in Romania. In November 2020, Google rolled out its mobile payment solution Google Pay in the country. The solution enables users to make contactless in-store, in-app, and online payments using their Android smartphone. Major banks and fintechs such as Banca Transilvania, CEC Bank, UniCredit Bank, ING Bank, Alpha Bank, and Revolut support Google Pay.
