Project Insight: Industrial Construction Projects - Middle East and Africa

Summary

The Construction Intelligence Center (CIC) is currently tracking industrial related construction projects in the Middle East and Africa with a total value of US$462.8 billion. Of this, US$201.7 billion is in the execution stage and US$116.5 billion is in the planning stage. Saudi Arabia, leads with projects valued at US$80.4 billion, followed by Oman with a project value of US$50.9 billion. In order of the projects value, the top ten countries are Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran, Nigeria, South Africa, the UAE, Guinea, Algeria, Egypt and Tanzania. The highest value project tracked by the CIC in the region is the US$25.0 billion Ras Al Khair Minerals Industrial City in Saudi Arabia followed by the US$20.0 billion Simandou Iron Ore Mine Development in Guinea.

The Middle East and Africa (MEA) region is a diverse area encompassing the oil-rich GCC countries of the Middle East and the developing commodity-rich countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Available data for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) area for 2019 suggests that regional growth will likely experience a slowdown in the coming months. Saudi Arabia is moving away from an oil-based economy, and is investing in industrial production facilities, as formulated in the National Transformation Program (NTP) and Saudi Vision 2030. New cities are being developed with special economic zones, which are designed to attract foreign investment. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the sub-Saharan area is expected to increase its economic growth from 2.9% in 2018 to 3.5% in 2019, and 3.6% in 2020. There are countries with stronger growth projections, with over one-third of sub-Saharan economies expected to grow above 5% in 2019-2020.
