The Department of Transport, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (DoTKP) is building a Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit System project in Pakistan.

The project involves the construction of a 26km transit infrastructure, divided along six corridors in three packages.

It also includes the construction of 150 bus shelters, Ambulance & Emergency Vehicle Access to BRT Corridor, Exclusive Cycle Lane along BRT Corridor, Pedestrian Walkways, 20 Rest Rooms, 61 Kanal of Commercial facilities, Pedestrian Bridge & Underpasses, Large Bus Depots to accommodate 300 Buses and six story parking plaza and the installation of signaling and safety systems.

The first corridor extends from Chamkani to Hayatabad, the second corridor runs through Chamkani, GT road, Sonehri Masjid road, Sir Syed Road and Jamrud road. The third corridor extends from Warsak road to Kohat road via Saddar and AK Afridi road, the fourth corridor runs from Charsadda road to Bara road terminal near ring road via Saddar. The fifth corridor will connect inner city circular road and ring road and the sixth corridor includes the construction of a road track from Chamkani to Hayatabad.

In 2013, DoTKP invited expression of interests (EOIs) to carry our detailed technical, financial and environmental feasibility study for the project, with a deadline of September 30, 2013.

In the second quarter of 2014, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Board of Investment and Trade, Pakistan Railway Advisory & Consultancy Services Ltd and Mott MacDonald were appointed as the study consultants.

In February 2015, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has made the final decision to develop the project and the project cost has been changed from US$630 million to US$180 million.

In June 2015, Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed the funding of US$180 million.

In April 2017, the project will receive loan from The Manila-based Asian Development Bank of US$361 million as a soft loan and US$60 million from KP Government.

As of June 2017, the tender process is underway with bid submission date extended from June 19, 2017, to June 29, 2017, due to certain technical reasons.

In August 2017, DoTKP opened bids where a total of five construction companies had submitted bids for the project. The construction has been divided into three sections:

The first section will start from Chamkani and pass through the GT Road to culminate at Firdous Cinema. Four companies including China Gansu International Corporation, Limak and ZKB, SGEC-Maqbool-Calsons, and Alke Insaat-Akkord Industry Construction submitted bids.

The second section will start from Firdous Cinema and end at Aman Chowk after crossing through Sukarno Chowk, Sunehri Masjid Road. China Gansu International Corporation, Limak and ZKB and China Railway and Maqbool Associates-Calsons submitted bids.

The third section will start from Aman Chowk and ends at Hayatabad. Four companies including M/S China Gansu International Corporation, Limak and ZKB, Maqbool Associates-Calsons and Alke Insaat-Akkord Industry Construction.

On September 12, 2017, The joint venture of Maqbool Associates (Pvt) Ltd., CALSON CONSTRUCTION CORPORATION and Shanghai Gaipu Elevator Co Ltd has been awarded as construction for package one.

In September 2017, The joint venture of China Railway First Group Co Ltd, Maqbool Associates (Pvt) Ltd. and CALSON CONSTRUCTION CORPORATION has been appointed as construction contractors for package two and three.

In October 2017, Construction works were commenced on all the three packages.

Construction works are underway on all packages and the total project is scheduled to be complete by June 30, 2021.

The Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit System involves the construction of a 26km planned transit infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

The US$422 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of 150 bus shelters

2. Construction of Ambulance & Emergency Vehicle Access to BRT Corridor

3. Construction of Exclusive Cycle Lane along BRT Corridor

4. Construction of Pedestrian Walkways, 20 Rest Rooms

5. Construction of 61 Kanal of Commercial facilities
