Cairo Electricity Production Company (CEPC), a subsidiary of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, is expanding the West Cairo Power Station in Giza, Egypt.

The project involves the construction of steam electricity production units with a capacity of 650MW. It includes the construction of a powerhouse, a substation, access roads and the installation of steam generators, condensers, transformers and auxiliaries, and the laying of transmission lines.

On April 5, 2015, CEPC signed a US$216 million loan agreement with the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) for the development of the project.

In July 2015, Power Generation Engineering and Services Company SAE has been appointed as lead consultant.

On November 25, 2015, the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) announced US$100 million loans.

On February 7, 2016, CEPC issued a tender for supply and installation of equipment (steam generators and auxiliaries) with the submission date of March 31, 2016.

CEPC received bids from Doosan Group, General Electric, a consortium of Siemens and Shanghai Electric, and Toyota Tsusho.

In April 2016, funding agreement worth US$100 million was signed with SFD.

On December 16, 2016, CEPC awarded a contract to Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction for the supply of turbines and generators. The scope of the contract is to supply, install, and test operates a 650MW-class turbine generator.

Egypt Engineering Services S.A.E. has been appointed as the civil engineer and Arab Contractors as EPC contractor.

In March 2017, CEPC awarded boiler supply contract to AC Boilers SpA.

On April 4, 2017, CEPC issued tenders for electrical equipment/instrument installation contract package with submission deadline May 27, 2017. The scope of work includes design, furnish, store, install, test and place into successful operation of DC equipment, electrical distribution panels, relay panels, UPS equipment, medium and low voltage cables, cable trays, conduits and other miscellaneous electrical and instrumentation equipment.

The project secured funds fro the project from Kuwaiti and Saudi development funds and other institutions.

In July 2017, EEHC awarded a civil works contract to the alliance of Hassan Allam Construction and Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC). The scope of the contract includes all civil, steel structure, underground piping, intake, discharge, dredging, and building works.

On July 4, 2017, civil works commenced on the project.

In August 2017, Siemens submitted the lowest bids for the electrical installations packages. The other two consortiums are Elsewedy Electro Tharwat; and Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction Company (ZTPC) Madkour EPC. JEMA Energy USA LLC was appointed as the Rectifiers of 220Vdc supply contract by Siemens.

In September 2017, KSB Aktiengesellschaft (KSB) was awarded a US$18.6 million pump supply contract. Other bidders for the contract were Japans Toyota Motor Corporation, Switzerlands Sulzer, and the US Flowserve Corporation.

In December 2017, China Energy Construction Group Jiangsu Electric Power Construction First Engineering Co Ltd was appointed as the mechanical sub-contractor (CP-118).

Civil works are underway and the project is scheduled to be completed in December 2019.
