New Energy Corporation (New Energy) is planning to undertake the Waste to Energy project in Pilbara, Western Australia, Australia.

The project involves the construction of waste-to-energy plant with 72MW of heat generation and 18.5MW electricity generation capacity of which 15.5MW will be supplied to grid. The plant will be having processing capacity of 70,000 to 130,000 tonnes of waste per annum.

The project includes the construction of onsite steam pipeline, chimneys, powerhouse, substation, internal access roads and related infrastructure, the installation of generators, turbines and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.

The plant will process waste food, green waste, paper, cardboard, various plastics, textiles, oily waste, wood tyres and rubber.

In August 2011, New Energy initiated public consultation for the project.

On May 4, 2012, New Energy submitted the Public Environment Review (PER) to the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). In August 2012, PER period was initiated.

On April 8, 2013, the project received preliminary approval from the EPA with final approvals received in May 2013.

Preston Point Consulting has been appointed as lead consultant, Hyder Consulting Holdings Pty Limited as technical consultant, SLR Consulting and Aurora Environmental Pty Ltd as environmental consultants, Herring Storer Acoustics as acoustic consultant, Shawmac Pty. Ltd as traffic, risk analysis and civil consultant, ENTECH-Renewable Energy Solutions Pty Ltd as waste pyrolysis-gasification technology supply contract and Tetra Tech, Inc as civil engineer.

In April 2014, Kiewit Corporation was appointed as design-build contractor. The scope of work includes the front-end engineering design (FEED) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services.

In June 2014, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) has agreed that it will provide up to US$38 million in senior debt finance for the development of the project.

In December 2014, the City of Karratha has signed an agreement with New Energy to provide 60,000 tonnes of landfill waste to convert it into electricity.

In July 2016, New Energy and Town of Port Hedland signed 20-year waste and renewable power services agreement.

Preston Point Consulting Pty Ltd has been appointed as management contract.

Design activities are underway.
