Summary
Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato SpA (Ferrovie) is undertaking the upgrade of railway line from Florence to Viareggio in Tuscany, Italy.
The project involves the doubling of a high-speed railway line from Florence to Viareggio which includes the following sections. It involves the doubling of the railway line from Pistoia to Lucca section, which further includes two sub-sections under it, with the first subsection, doubling of a line from Pistoia to Montecatini and the second subsection, doubling of the railway line from Montecatini to Lucca.
The project also includes the construction of stations, rail tracks and level crossings, and the installation of transmission lines, signaling systems and related electrical equipment.
On November 17, 2008, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT), Tuscany Regional government (TRG) and RFI.
On October 21, 2011, TRG signed a MoU with Pistoia provincial government.
In February 2014, the municipalities of Pistoia, Lucca, Viareggio, Montecatini, Capannori, Ponte Buggianese, Monsummano, Monte Carlo held consultations with governing authorities to discuss project plans.
In June 2014, RFI secured US$237 million grant from MoIT to double the railway line from Pistoia to Lucca section.
TRG has already allocated US$37 million to carry out preliminary works for the Pistoia to Montecatini section.
In April 2015, RFI signed a MoU with TRG to complete the design process.
In July 2015, RFI initiated the procedure of updating the preliminary draft doubling the sub-section Montecatini to Lucca.
Ceprini Costruzioni S.r.l., Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie S.p.a., Cemes S.p.A has been appointed as construction contractors.
On May 13, 2016, construction works commenced on Pistoia to Montecatini section.
Construction works on the first section are underway and scheduled to be complete by 2019. Final design works on the second section are underway.
