Construction in Bangladesh - Key Trends and Opportunities to 2025 (H1 2021)

Summary

Bangladesh’s construction industry is forecast to recover by 8% in 2021, after contracting by an estimated 1.2% in 2020. In 2022, the industry is projected to continue to recover, with output increasing by 7.2% and then expanding by 7.1% per year over the remainder of the forecast period (2023-2025). Over this period, the industry’s output is expected to be supported by the government’s focus on the development of infrastructure, as well as through investment in energy and utilities construction projects.

In June 2020, the government allocated BDT2.05 trillion (US$23.2 billion) under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the fiscal year (FY) 2020-2021. The funds will be spent on 1,584 projects, and of the total, BDT521.8 billion (US$5.9 billion) will be invested on the transport sector, BDT258 billion (US$2.9 billion) on the physical planning, water supply and housing sector, BDT248 billion (US$2.8 billion) on the power sector and BDT130.3 (US$1.5 billion) on the healthcare sector. Other key projects include plans by the Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) to construct underground railways across Dhaka under the Underground Metro Rail Line Program. The BDT861.7 billion (US$10 billion) program involves the construction of a 48km underground railway line, stations, subway, platforms, and related facilities by the end of 2024.
