The Ministry of Higher Education and Highways (MHEH) and The Road Development Authority, Sri Lanka (RDA) are undertaking the the construction of a bridge on the Kelani river in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The project involves the construction of a six-lane, 380m long bridge. It includes the construction of interchanges, service roads, road intersections, culverts, and the installation of signaling and safety systems.
Tender for the construction contract will be issued in packages.
Oriental Consultants Co Ltd and Katahira Engineer Co Ltd have been appointed as design and management contractors.
In March 2015, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed an ODA loan agreement with the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to provide US$342 million funds for the project.
Tenders were invited for the construction contract and in August 2017, SMCC-SANKEN JV, a joint venture of Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Ltd and Sanken Construction Ltd was announced as the lowest bidder for the construction.
In September 2017, JMT Joint Venture comprised of JFE Engineering Corporation, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co Ltd and TODA Corporation was awarded a US$281 million construction contract for the Package 1 (Steel Bridge Section).
In December 2017, construction works commenced and the project construction is expected to take 36 months to complete.
