GKI Resort Pty Ltd (GKIResort), a subsidiary of Tower Holdings, plans to undertake the Great Keppel Island Revitalization project in Australia.
The project involves the construction of a new integrated resort. The project plan involves four precincts.
1. Environmental Protection Precinct
It comprises 575ha dedicated to the rehabilitation, maintenance, management and protection of the environment. This will include management and care of culturally significant sites as well as the island ecology.
2. Marine Services Precinct
It will be located on the northwest of the Island and will be the heart and soul of the Island. It will include a 250 berth marina, yacht club, ferry terminal, barge terminal, restaurants, shops and the research center.
3. Fishermans Beach Precinct
It will be located in the southwest of the Island and will predominantly comprise the Fishermans Beach Resort Hotel, day spa, luxury villas, luxury apartments, an airstrip, a new 250-room low-rise hotel, restaurants, conference rooms, and a range of recreation activities. It could also be the location of a potential casino on the Island.
4. Clam Bay Resort Precinct
It will be located central to the Island and will predominantly comprise a spectacular 18-hole championship golf course, golf clubhouse, driving range, tennis court, villas, neighborhood park.
The project will include the construction of 250-room hotel, 300 eco-tourism apartments, 750 eco-tourism villas, a beach club, cultural centre, sporting ovals, 575ha environmental park, a boutique casino with 35 gaming tables, child care facilities, public walking tracks, emergency service facilities, a church, and amphitheater, upgrading existing airstrip and restoration of the Leekes Homestead.
CQ Consulting Group, Humphreys Reynolds Perkins, and Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) have been appointed as the Community and EIS consultant; Statutory Planning and EIS Compilation; and Master Planner and Architect for the project respectively.
Chenoweth Environmental Planning and FRC Environmental have been appointed as the Terrestrial Flora, Fauna, World Heritage and Visual Impact consultant; and Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality consultant respectively.
OPUS Engineering has been appointed as the Engineering and Infrastructure consultant.
ASK Consulting has been appointed as the Air Quality, Greenhouse, Noise and Vibration consultant.
Water Technology has been appointed as the Coastal Engineering consultant; and Foresight Partners as Economic Assessment consultant for the project.
Douglas Partners has been appointed as the Geotechnical and Groundwater consultant; and ImpaxSIA as the Social Impact Assessment consultant for the project.
Greg Norman Golf Course Design has been appointed to design the golf club and an 18-hole golf course of the project.
The project will be funded by Biodiversity Conservation Fund (BCF). The funds collected through the BCF will be managed through a research partnership with key local environmental associations.
In July 2009, an application including initial advice statement was submitted. In June 2010, GKI Resort submitted a revised referral to the Australian Government to declare the project a controlled action under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
In July 2010, the Australian Government declared the project as a controlled action. In October 2010, the public consultation was held for the project.
In February 2011, the Australian Government approved the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) guidelines for the project.
In July 2012, EIS was on public consultation for the project. In November 2012, supplementary information to EIS was submitted.
In March 2013, the Federal Government gave final approval to the project.
In September 2015, Federal Government granted two-year extension towards the start of construction.
GKIResort is seeking for investors and awaiting casino development license.
