Summary


The Ministry of Transport and Communications, Qatar (MOTC) plans to undertake the construction of the Sharq Crossing project in Qatar.

The project involves the construction of a 12km long crossing. It will include the construction of three bridges, two immersed tube tunnels and three cut-and-cover tunnels, small pedestrian bridge, supporting walls and related facilities.

The three bridges are named as West Bay Bridge, Cultural Village Bridge, and Sharq Bridge of different length ranging between 600m and 1,310m and will connect to 8km of subsea tunnels.

West Bay Bridge will be a two-deck tied arched structure incorporating a longitudinal park and cable car system, extending to an island of terraced levels providing recreational facilities and a marina.

Cultural Village Bridge will comprise a series of cable-stayed structures that skim across the bay in a pattern of descending scales creating a long bridge.

Sharq Bridge will be a tubular structure that spans the inlet adjacent to the Hamad International Airport (HIA).

The immersed tunnel link between Sharq Bridge and West Bay Bridge will consist of three lanes each way and two lanes in each direction between West Bay Bridge and Cultural Village Bridge.

COWI has been appointed as the study consultant and Santiago Calatrava, LLP as the design consultant for the project. Some of the other firms which had submitted their designs were Grimshaw, Arup, Atkins, Halcrow, and Forster+Partners.

In April 2013, US-based Fluor and KEO International Consultants were appointed to manage the project.

Tunnel Engineering Consultants (TEC) has been appointed as the engineering consultant. TEC scope of work includes the validated concept design of the two immersed tunnels of 3.1km and 2.8km, the three cut-and-cover tunnels with a length of 950m -1250m each connecting the bridges to the mainland and the Marine Interchange of approx. 600 m, connecting the two immersed tunnels and one of the bridges.

The scope of work also included the design of bridge foundations, roads, utilities, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems, the integral safety concept including ventilation and construction schedule.

TEC worked together with HBI Haerter Ltd. (HBI) for safety and tunnel ventilation and Geotechnical Consulting Group (GCG) for geotechnical expertise.

In September 2013, TEC commenced the work and was completed by January 2014.

In the second quarter of 2014, Ashghal invited pre-qualification bids and expression of interest for the construction work.

The work was split into eight packages; land-based enabling works, marine-based enabling works, west Bay approach and bridge, cultural city approach and bridge, Sharq approach and bridge, immersed tunnel and marine interchange, surface street modifications, Systems integration contract, operations and maintenance (O&M) contract. The main package is design-and-build contracts, which covers West Bay approach and bridge, cultural city approach and bridge, Sharq approach and bridge, and the immersed tunnel and marine interchange contract.

On October 18, 2014, 13-14 groups submitted pre-qualification documents for the contract of tunnels and 19-21 groups have submitted for the contract of bridges.

In January 2015, the project was placed on hold due to varied reasons, one of which is financial issues.

In November 2017, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Qatar (MOTC) invited pre-qualification bids for the PreConcept design consultancy services with a submission deadline on December 24, 2017.

Gruppo migliaccio has been appointed as supply contractor.

MOTC is in the process of appointing design consultant.

Scope


The project involves the construction of a 12km long crossing at the Doha Bay in Doha, Qatar.

The US$5,000 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of three bridges

2. Construction of two immersed tube tunnel

3. Construction of small pedestrian bridge

4. Construction of supporting walls
