The Government of Madhya Pradesh (GoMP) is planning to build a metro system in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.

The project involves the construction of a 27.87km light rail metro system divided into three corridors.

The first corridor includes a 10.5km light rail system from Kapil Nagar to Habibganj and comprise 10 stations, the second corridor includes a 9km route from Suruchi Nagar to BHEL with nine stations and the third corridor will run from Lalghati to Platinum Plaza will span a distance of 9km and comprise nine stations.

In January 2009, GoMP and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) revealed a preliminary blueprint of the proposed development.

The Urban Development & Environment Department (UDED) entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with DMRC in April 2010, to facilitate the preparation of a feasibility report on the project.

In July 2010, DMRC advised GoMP to prepare a city mobility plan and comprehensive transport plan before commencing a survey on the proposed metro routes.

DMRC commenced initial survey works in August 2011. On December 12, 2011, GoMP approved the initial development plans.

GoMP requested DMRC to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) on December 20, 2011, with the associated investment being borne by the state and central government.

In October 2012, the Government of India (GoI) announced its in-principle approval for preparing the DPR.

In May 2013, GoMP entered into an agreement with a joint venture firm comprising Light Rail Transit Consultants GmbH and Rohit Associates Architects & Engineers Pvt Ltd for the preparation of a DPR.

In May 2014, the Ministry of Urban Development and Administration, Government of Madhya Pradesh (MoUDA) finalized the feasibility report of the project.

In January 2015, GoMP revealed that the public-private partnership (PPP) company is being tentatively called MP Metro Rail Corporation.

In August 2015, GoMP, along with UDED, is in the process of finalizing a government-run company for the development of the project.

On February 12, 2016, it has been announced that special attention would be paid to smart design and smart implementation of the project.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding US$840 million for the project and US$210 will be provided by the central government.

In December 2016, the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has approved the DPR for the project.

In March 2017, JICA was refused to give fund for the project.

In September 2017, MPMRCL shortlisted three major consortiums for a general consulting contract as follows:

> A consortium of DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH, Geodata Engineering S.p.A. and Louis Berger Group (emerged as the first ranked bidder)

> A consortium of Ayesa and Korea Rail

> A consortium of Egis, Systra, and Aecom

GoMP is in the process of seeking funds from European Investment Bank for the project.

4. Construction of administrative space

5. Installation of signaling and safety systems
