Summary
International arrivals to the UAE increased at a CAGR of 8.13% during the historic period. The growth was partly driven by the steady political environment in the UAE compared to other major tourist destinations in the region such as Egypt and Tunisia. However, trips from Russia, the fastest-growing source market for the UAE during the historic period, have been declining since 2014 due to the depreciating currency in that country. Driven by a reduced unemployment rate, domestic trips totaled 7.6 million in 2014, while outbound trips stood at 4.6 million. Dubai has set “Tourism Vision 2020” plan, aiming to attract 20 million tourists and AED300 billion (US$81.7 billion) of tourism revenue.

 Key Findings
 - Inbound tourism in the UAE registered healthy growth during the historic period (2009-2014), with trips increasing from 9.1 million in 2009 to 13.4 million in 2014. The growth was largely driven by the UAEs efforts to attract tourists by investing in tourism infrastructure such as theme parks and stadiums, and emerging as the global aviation hub by building two world-class airports in Dubai (Dubai International and Al Maktoum International). Additionally, political instability in other key tourist destinations in the Middle East such as Egypt also supported the growth. However, arrivals from Russia dipped by 3% in 2014 due to economic crisis in the country and the depreciation of ruble. Domestic trips totaled 7.6 million in 2014 while outbound trips stood at 4.6 million. Saudi Arabia is the most preferred outbound travel destination for the UAE residents and most trips are religious. They visit Mecca and Medina, which are considered holy places for Muslims

 - Arrivals from the UK declined in 2014 by 12% as Britons stayed away from the UAE due to the increasing number of arrests for violating local laws. According to figures from the UK government, from June 2012 to June 2014, the number of British tourists who were arrested in the UAE was up by 30%. The annual British Behavior Abroad 2014 report states that the UAE ranks among the top-five countries where Britons need consular assistance. Common cases against UK citizens in the UAE are getting in trouble for being drunk, sex outside marriage, and abusive behavior such as road rage

 - Dubai aims to attract 500,000 medical tourists a year by 2020 and increase medical tourisms contribution to the economy by Dh2.6 billion (US$708 million). To achieve this objective, four public hospitals and 18 private hospitals will be built, and the number of healthcare staff in the private-sector is expected to increase by 3,800. Private hospitals will target patients from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Gulf States, and South Asia as most of the medical patients who currently visit Dubai are from these countries. Treatments to be offered include plastic surgery, orthopedic and sports medicine, dental procedures, ophthalmology, and dermatology
