Samsung Deal – Ontario All Set to Become a Leader in Green Power Development

 Summary

The provincial government of Ontario, Canada recently signed a US$6.7 billion deal with the South Korean consortium of Samsung and Korea Electrical Power Corporation (KEPC) to develop green energy projects in the region. The recently concluded deal is a reflection of the attraction of the province in renewable energy due to the Green Energy and Green Economy Act enacted by the provincial government in 2009. The deal is a major initiative that would enable the Ontario government to achieve the provincial target to strengthen the province’s renewable energy value chain as well as provide opportunities for the industry stake-holders in the region. The deal has showcased the government’s commitment towards its green energy initiatives. However, the deal still received mixed reactions from the renewable energy industry even though the ambitious project is expected to make Ontario a leader in green power development.
