China has a long history in the production of lactic acid, and has witnessed
fast development in the past few years, playing an increasingly important role
in global lactic acid supply. According to the data from Chinas Industrial
Biotechnology Development Report released in 2009, China’s lactic acid output
accounts for about 30% of the global total in 2008. However, after rapid
expansion, the country’s lactic acid capacity has been surplus with limited
domestic demand and slowing growth in export. Given China’s overall lagged
technology, the quality of Chinese lactic acid is poorer than that of developed
countries. The majority of Chinese lactic acid manufacturers mainly produce
DL-lactic acid, only a few manufacturers can produce high quality L-lactic acid.
However, lactic acid production enjoys promising market potential in China.
