Climate Change & Power Generation: An international analysis of associations and feelings towards coal, attitudes towards coal & nuclear power stations; and public reaction to Al Gore’s idea for America to commit to producing 100% of its electricity from carbon-free sources, within 10 years. - Environmental Choices 3.a
Coal is a plentiful, high-carbon fuel which poses a grave threat to our climate. As Dr. James Hansen testified in 2007, “Saving the planet and creation surely requires phase-out of coal except where the CO2 is captured and sequestered”. Yet coal seems to have a warmth and homely feel - for example, it is used in the branding of a new restaurant chain in the UK, and in homely North American press advertising. Are many people emotionally attached to coal in a positive manner despite its dangers? Questions addressed: • What emotional attachments do people have with ‘coal’? • How does people’s emotional attachment to coal affect their attitudes towards power generation? • Does the public approve of or oppose more coal or nuclear power stations being built? • How much does the public support the idea of coal power stations with carbon capture technology? • How much awareness and support is their for Al Gore’s ‘RePower America’ campaign? • How does support for the concepts behind his campaign differ between countries? Quote … 31% of Americans strongly support the Repower America campaign, and a further 51% moderately support it….. |
