Total Petrochemicals & Refining USA, Inc. (TPRI), a subsidiary of Total SA, is undertaking the construction of a petrochemical plant in Port Arthur, Jefferson County, Texas, the US.
The project involves the construction of a petrochemical plant with an ethane production capacity of one million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
It includes the construction of polyethylene unit, production units, processing units, control rooms, storage units and related facilities, and the installation of six SRT-III (Short Residence Time) pyrolysis heaters, equipment and machinery and safety and security systems.
On April 6, 2015, TPRI filed an environmental permit application with the Texas Commission on environmental Quality and the US Army Corp. of Engineers for the development of the project.
In September 2015, CB&I was awarded a contract for providing its proprietary ethylene technology license and front-end engineering and design (FEED) services for the project.
CB&I commenced FEED works on the project in September 2015 and completed in the third quarter of 2016.
In March 2017, TPRI awarded a US$1,300 million engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (CB&I).
On March 27, 2017, Total made a preliminary agreement to create a joint venture (JV) with Nova Chemicals Corp. and Borealis AG to invest in the project. According to the agreement, Total will hold a 50% stake in the JV.
In February 2018, the JV was established and the agreement was signed and Total will hold a 50% interest in the JV, while Novealis Holdings LLC (NHLLC) a JV between Borealis and Nova Chemicalswill own the remaining 50% stake in the yet-to-be-named entity.
Construction works are underway with completion scheduled in 2020.
