EDF Energy Renewables (EDF ER), a joint venture between EDF Energies Nouvelles and EDF Energy is undertaking the construction of the Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration project in Northumberland, the UK.

The project involves the construction of a 100MW wind demonstration farm comprises of 41.5MW of an offshore wind farm. It includes the installation of 15 turbines in three arrays in depths of 35m, 45m and 55m, the construction of substations, powerhouses and related infrastructure, and the laying of transmission lines.

On Aug 4, 2010, Narec was awarded an Agreement for Lease from TCE for the development of the project.

In March 2012, Narec submitted an application for the construction and operation of the project.

In the fourth quarter of 2013, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) granted permission. The project also received approvals from the Northumberland County Council.

In May 2014, Narec lost the rights to build the project after the consented site was returned to the market. TCE is in process of seeking the new developer.

On October 31, 2014, EDF ER acquired the rights to develop the project by securing both the seabed rights from TCE and associated land rights and meteorological data from the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI) has been appointed as a construction contract; Balfour Beatty as construction contractor for the onshore substation and associated electrical works; Royal BAM Group as foundation contractor; FoundOcean Ltd as piling contractor; and Atkins as technical advisor.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, a joint venture of MHI and Vestas Wind Systems A/S has been appointed as turbine supply contractor. MHI will deliver five V1648.3 MW turbines and will be installed by Jan De Nul Group. VBMS has been appointed for supply and installation of offshore export and array cable.

In the second quarter of 2016, construction work commenced.

In April 2017, four out of five gravity foundations installed.

As of May 2017, Gravity based foundations works are underway and the foundations are being assembled at the Neptune dry dock on the river Tyne in Newcastle.
