Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) is planning to upgrade the road between Lesseru and Nakodok border, Kenya.

The project involves the upgrade of a 601km road between Lesseru and Nakodok/Nadapal border and laying of 1,000km fiber-optic cables (FOC). The road upgrade will be developed in three sections.

The first section includes the upgrade of a 164km road from Lesseru to Marich Pass. It is divided into three sections: a 59km road from Lesseru to Kitale, a 40km section from Kitale to Kapenguria and a 65km road from Kapenguria to Marich Pass.

The second section includes the upgrade of a 197km road from Marich Pass to Lodwar. It is divided into two sections: 110km road from Marich Pass to Lokichar and a 87km from Lokichar to Lodwar.

The third section includes the upgrade of around 240km road from Lodwar to Nakodok. It is divided into three sections: a 69km road from Lodwar to Lokitaung section, a 146km road from Lokitaung to Lokichogio and a 30km road from Lokichogio to Nakodok section.

The project includes the construction of flyovers, bus bays, service roads, truck parking spaces, pedestrian foot bridges and walkways, and the installation of signaling and safety systems.

ICT Authority (ICT), the developer of fiber optic cable. Cable installation at Kenyan side of the project costs US$24.62 million, while the Sudan side costs $14.2 million.

The project received US$70 million from the Government of Kenya, US$500 million grant from World bank and the remaining funds from African Development Fund of France (AFD), German Development Bank (KfW), the European Union (EU), European Investment Bank (EIB), African Development Bank (AfDB), Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA).

On March 7, 2013, KeNHA requested an expression of interest (EoI) from companies to provide consulting services for the project with August 5, 2014 as the submission deadline. The scope of work includes feasibility studies and detailed designs.

Envilead Ltd was appointed as the environmental consultant .

In December 2014, Kocks Consult GmbH, Egis group and Sheladia Associates Inc. have been appointed as study consultants for the first, second and third sections respectively.

On January 23, 2015, Kenya Ministry of ICT made a MoU with South Sudan Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services to implement fibre optic cable.

World Bank has signed financing agreement of US$500 million and issued the funds for the project on July 20, 2015.

On September 9, 2015, ICT started implementation of FOC (Fibre optic cable) at the Kenyan-side of the project.

In December 2015, KeNHA formally issued request for bids (invitation to bid (ITB)) for the appointment of construction contractor for the project development.

Construction contract has been awarded to an undisclosed company.
