United Utilities Group PLC (UU) is undertaking the construction of a water pipeline in Cumbria, the UK.

The project involves the construction of a 100km pipeline linking Thirlmere reservoir to West Cumbria.

The project includes the construction of 32km of raw water aqueduct, 37km of new water mains, three new pumping stations delivering 15 million liters a day, 20km of water mains refurbishment using slipline technology, one new Water Treatment Works (WTW) with a capacity to abstract 90 million liters a day, three new service reservoirs, one service reservoir refurbishment, decommissioning of five service reservoirs, decommissioning of three WTW.

Ricardo Energy & Environment has been appointed as environmental consultant.

Thirlmere was identified as preferred alternative source of water for West Cumbria following consultation during the third quarter of 2013.

In 2014, UU proposed to invest in the construction of a pipeline to transport water from Thirlmere to West Cumbria. There were three options all requiring a new water treatment works, with pumping stations and underground service reservoirs.

In March 2014, three possible routes for the new water pipelines were displayed on the public exhibition. The three potential routes are:

Option A: To build a new water main from Thirlmere following the route of the A591 or A66 to join west Cumbrias existing water supply network west of Cockermouth, and new water works near Thirlmere reservoir.

Option B: To build a new water main from Thirlmere following the route of the A591 or A66 to Cockermouth and new water works near Cockermouth.

Option C: To build a new water main from Thirlmere following the route of the A591 to Bothel Moor, and new water works near Bothel Moor.

In January 2015, UU has come up with a single preferred route, which follows the route of A591 northwards, skirting Keswick and passing east of Bassenthwaite Lake, before turning due west towards Bridekirk.

On May 13, 2015, UU released a pre-qualification tender for a new 13km pipeline with submission deadline as June 5, 2015 respectively. The scope of the contract involves design, construction and commissioning of a new 13km pipeline from Bridekirk Water Treatment Works to Quarry Hill Service Reservoir in West Cumbria.

On May 31, 2015, the second phase of the public consultation on the project concluded.

In July 2015, UU released a pre-qualification notice for a contract to refurbish the 20km Cornhow to Stainburn water mains as part of the project with a submission deadline of July 27, 2015. The scope of the contract involves design, construction and commissioning of approximately 20km of water mains refurbishment using slip line technology and pipe laying techniques in West Cumbria.

J Murphy and Sons Limited has been appointed as the design consultant with contract value worth US$1.8 million and Jacobs UK Limited as environmental study consultant. In January 2016, Farrans and its joint venture partner Atkins were awarded US$122 million contract for the construction of the 13km pipeline.

In April 2016, UU has submitted the planning application.

The project will be co-financed by the European Investment Bank.

On November 15, 2016, UU secured planning final approvals from Allerdale Council.

In April 2017, Farrans and its joint venture partner Roadbridge UK Ltd were awarded for the construction of 32km of large diameter twin mains pipeline and 24km of single diameter water mains.

As of June 2017, pre-construction works are underway. The construction works are expected to take four and half years for completion.

The US$458 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of 32km of raw water aqueduct
2. Construction of 37km of new water mains
3. Construction of three new pumping stations

6. Construction of three new service reservoirs
7. Refurbishment of one service reservoir
