Synopsis

The Swedish construction industry will continue to expand over the forecast period (20152019) due to government investment in infrastructure, energy and residential projects.

While addressing the housing shortage and focusing on developing renewable energy sources, the government also aims to improve its transport and tourism infrastructure.

Over the forecast period, growth will also be driven by increasing public and private sector investments, disposable income, population growth and urbanization

In real terms, the industrys growth rate is expected to decelerate over the forecast period. The industrys slow growth rate can be attributed to weak economic conditions, due to uncertain economic developments in the eurozone, and very slow economic growth in neighboring countries such as Norway and Finland.

Key Highlights

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Sweden is one of the lowest-carbon-emitting countries in the organization. As part of its energy policy, the government has set the target to be independent of fossil fuels by 2030 and to be a country with no net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. To achieve these targets, it plans to invest in renewable energy projects. Investments include the construction of a wind farm in Markbygden, Stor-Blaliden and the Gulf of the Bothnia Sea.

In order to improve the residential construction market and thereby increase the housing supply for its citizens, an amount of SEK3.2 billion (US$384.0 million) per annum has been made available for companies constructing student accommodation and rental properties, as part of the governments 2016 budget. Private sector investments will also support the residential construction markets development.

Sweden is expected to record an increase in healthcare investments, as the proportion of elderly people (aged 65 and above) is expected to increase from 1.9 million in 2013 to 3.0 million by 2060. This will make the need for healthcare facilities greater. Accordingly, the government is investing in the construction of hospitals. Investments include the construction of the New Karolinska Solna University Hospital project in Stockholm by 2018. Srmland County Council is also planning to refurbish and extend three hospitals in Sdermanland, Sweden by 2023.

Industrial construction will be fueled by private investments. Projects include the construction of a pulp manufacturing facility in Varo, Sdra Cell AB is expanding an existing pulp manufacturing facility as well as modernizing two pulp manufacturing lines to increase the production capacity from 380,000TPA to 425,000TPA in Mrrum, Blekinge.

The Swedish housing market registered a strong performance in 2014, amid moderate economic growth. According to Sveriges Riksbank, the number of new construction projects for multi-family housing increased by 16.0% in 2014, when compared with 2013.
